Dr. Fernanda

Skin care may not be the first thing that you think about when talking about self-care but it is an important part of it. People should feel happy about how they feel about their appearances and emotions. This is why I shadowed and talked to Dr.Fernanda of Fernanda's Skin. I shadowed Dr.Fernanda for two weeks in her official. The overall experience was great. I was about to see how people felt better about themselves after getting a treatment. One highlight from shadowing was when a patient who had an inter case of ance told me how acne was something that was happening her back in life. After doing a couple of treatments with Dr.Fernanda, they started to feel comfortable and happier. At the end of my shadowing, I sat down with Dr. Fernanda to talk about her career and what self-care means to her.

How did you start your Career?

In this country, I started in West Palm Beach. I worked as a cosmetologist because I got my license of medicine (M.D) in Venezuela, but I couldn't use it in the US. So, I started to do small jobs until I was able to gain a following. Before getting my license in the US, I worked in a small apartment. I put a lot of money in radio advisement. When I got a lot of customers than I got an official. That was 15 years ago.

What is self-care to you?

Doing things that make you feel like the best version of yourself.

What is your favourite part of the Job?

I love reshaping people's faces because I love when a client look in the mirror and happy with their look. I thank God for allowing me to have this job because I love it. It doesn't matter if a client is paying me $50 or $300 for something. I focus more on the needs of clients and how to make them feel better about themselves. Nowadays, people think something that worked on someone else will work on them. That is not true. People have different skin types and needs.

How Do you practice self-care?

I try to focus on the things that make me happy and do them. I am lucky because I am in a career that I love and don't have to get away from it. Things, like spending time with my daughters or having a day off, are ways that I practice self-care. I am in a field were self-empowerment and self-care are at the center. This has allowed me to appreciate the things in my life more.

Who taught you about Self care?

I can't clearly remember who taught me it, but I feel that people learn to value their time and selves as they get older. I had to learn how to balance work and home by doing it. So, I would say that I am mostly self-taught.
